Introduction to Oriental Medicine

What is Oriental Medicine?
Oriental medicine has been serving humankind for more than 4,000 years and is one of the most continuously practiced medicines in the world. It includes Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese styles, based on a philosophy that nature and cosmology are the interactions of yin and yang. Health and disease can be described in terms of yin and yang. When yin and yang are in harmony, health and happiness are achieved. When out of harmony, disease and unhappiness result.

Qi is a form of subtle energy, the vital force that permeates nature. To be human is to have qi. Oriental medicine strives to achieve balance through many techniques, called branches of the medicine which enhance or clear qi in order to achieve health: Acupuncture, Chinese Herbology, Food Energetics (nutrition), Tuina, and Tai Qi/Qi Gong.

Who gets acupuncture?
My diverse patients have been two legged and four legged, infants to over eighty years old. They have wanted help with body and mind.

Differentiation
To be successful in treating you, I will ask you questions to find out about your story. In order to identify your pattern disharmony, I will feel your pulse at your wrist and look at your tongue, which tells me alot about your health. Then we will plan your care: Do you need acupuncture? Herbs? Both? Nutrition? How can we work with your other health care providers?

Treatment
Acupuncture
Renowned for pain management, I use acupuncture for all situations possible. I have a very gentle approach, very easy for children, yet powerful enough when warranted. It is said, "Acupuncture opens the way, herbs make it stay". You do not need to receive acupuncture in order to receive herbs, and vice versa.

Herbs
Chinese Herbs are great for most situations. I find them indispensable for infertility, colds, flus, and infections, skin problems, gynecology, certain men's health, pscho-emotional, sleep, chronic energy problems and chronic health problems in general. Children and animals also respond very well to herbs. Herbs are given according to Chinese medical principles, and your Chinese diagnosis.

Moxibustion
This is a warming and nourishing addition to acupuncture.

Nutrition
We look at food energetics. Foods are used for balancing health and giving us Qi (vitality). I teach you which foods do or do not have qi, and which foods rob you of vitatliy.

Cupping
This technique pulls out toxic energy which is great for muscles, lungs, infection, etc.

Lifestyle
We look at change for improvement.

Compassion
This is best experienced, not described.
